KARACHI: Pakistan’s mango exports in the current season have so far crossed 80,000 tons, up 36% compared to the same period of last year, according to data of the All Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters, Importers and Merchants Association (PFVA). PFVA Chairman Waheed Ahmed said he expected the country would achieve the export target of 100,000 tons by the end of the season. This year’s seasonal exports started on May 20 with an aim to fetch $75 million.
Last year, at least 58,000 tons of mangoes were exported during the same period while total exports stood at only 68,000 tons.
A sharp jump in the export of mangoes to European countries has been witnessed this year with 8,400 tons shipped so far compared to 5,500 tons last year, an increase of 52%, says a press release.
According to Ahmed, the export of mango could be boosted to $600 to $700 million by focusing on research and development work and coordinated efforts on the part of institutions linked to the horticulture industry.
The export of $200 million worth of mangoes is possible in the next couple of years if the government continues to provide support and guidance to the neglected sector.
Ahmed said the recently concluded Mango Festival at the President House was going to support the development of horticulture industry in Pakistan.
“Such shows will not only boost exports of the highly valued fruit, but will also help in marketing of value-added products, which will ultimately benefit thousands of farmers and exporters associated with the industry,” he said.
He thanked President Mamnoon Hussain for playing his role in the promotion of the fruit and hosting the mango show at the President House where a large number of Islamabad-based diplomats attended the ceremony and evinced keen interest in different varieties of mangoes.
In this first-ever mango show at the President House, over 10 varieties of the fruit and at least 25 value-added products including pulps, juices and ice cream were showcased.
Keeping in view the success of the show, the PFVA has decided to hold the event annually at the President House. It will be organised in July at the beginning of the season which will enable the organizers to display 100 to 150 varieties.
