ISLAMABAD: Ayaz Sadiq, National Assembly speaker, rejected Sheikh Rasheed’s reference to disqualification of PM Nawaz Sharif.

The reference filed by Shaikh Rasheed against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has been dismissed due to lack of evidence, sources said.

Sheikh Rasheed filed a 162-page disqualification reference against PM Nawaz at the Speaker’s Office in August.

He had made disclosures of the Panama Papers basis of the disqualification reference.

Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf, Pakistan Awami Tehrik and Pakistan Peoples party have all filed disqualification references against the Prime Minister with the speaker as well with the Election Commission of Pakistan.

Opposition parties have mainly accused the PM of concealing his foreign assets from the ECP and buying possessing wealth earned through illegal means.

The reference, which was filed on August 4 by Danial Aziz and other PML-N parliamentarians seeking disqualification of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, would have automatically stood referred to the ECP at the end of a 30-day period under Article 63 of the Constitution.

According to sources, the reference filed by the PML-N members on August 4, stated that Imran Khan had made misstatements about his property and sought his disqualification from the parliament seat.

“The reference seeking disqualification of the PTI chief has been received,” the election commission sources said. The commission proceeds over the matter after reviewing it, sources added.
